I’ve had the distinct pleasure of working with Lauren Miller from Heritage Flowers on several events. Each time her pleasant and creative demeanor proves to be an incredible asset for the overall feel and design of the event. Because of her natural eye for floral design I want to share her story and her perspective on how to approach floral design for your wedding.
Enjoy getting to know Lauren!
What is your story? How did you begin to create floral arrangements and become a floral designer?
From a young age, I’ve always been drawn to both flowers and design! My Grandma had a beautiful garden that would captivate my imagination as a child. To her horror, I often would pluck or pull up half her flowers in order to make bouquets! I love seeing color and design, and have been always been drawn to natural, organic palettes.
In 2014, I started dreaming of owning my floral design business and began to research and pursue classes. I then began working in a local flower shop for over a year to gain skill in floral design theory and business practices. Heritage Flowers was launched in the Fall of 2015 specializing in weddings and events, and I haven’t looked back since! My desire was to build a business that truly cares about its clients and the quality of product.
What is your favorite part about floral design?
To be honest – I really love to work with flowers! I am a total nerd and enjoy learning plant names and trying to identify them in nature. It’s amazing to see how each flower is unique and special and how it gives its all, each time it opens and blooms. It’s a great reminder for me to do the same! For me, floral arranging is the perfect intersection of peaceful beauty and complex composition. I’m challenged to think about design, color and movement while also relishing the simple beauty of each bloom.
When you work with a bride, how do you help her craft her vision for her floral design for her wedding?
Working with brides is one of my favorite parts of my job! There is nothing more special than a wedding celebration- and flowers really bring an event to the next level of lovely. In order to care for each bride I work with, I make sure not to book more than one wedding per day. My goal is to walk with the bride for each step of planning, and to make it as hassle free as possible. I start with a free consultation, where we chat about her vision. From there, I craft a tailored proposal, set up a shared Pinterest board, and remain in close communication up until the wedding day. At each step, I offer suggestions and ideas to help her hone in on her color scheme, design choices, and item budgets.
Do you have any advice or tips you would like to share with brides who are just starting to design their florals for their wedding?
I always encourage brides to be themselves and not let Pinterest dictate their style. Although I am huge fan of Pinterest, I often see brides get into a rut regarding their color palette and design choices. They feel the need to have exactly what they see online, or to fit in with the current color trend. I say to forget that stuff! Pick colors you and your partner love, and then I will help you find flowers within your budget. Don’t feel limited by the style that everyone else has done. Instead, look at your wedding venue as a blank canvas and together we can dream about how to make it YOUR special day, that’s unique and beautiful.
What is your favorite floral design at the moment? What do you think will be the up and coming floral design trends?
I’ve always been drawn to bright, happy colors, so my favorite designs right now incorporate a very contrasted palette. I love a natural, organic and wild feel regarding style and texture. I’ve noticed that floral trends are headed back towards more color. In the past couple years, very muted palettes like blush, ivory and greenery have dominated the scene. Although I love these colors, it’s fun to see more variegated and bright contrasts pop up on the scene.
If brides/clients are interested in working with you, what is the best way to connect with you and/or request a quote?
The best way for a client to contact me is via email at lauren@heritageflowersaz.com or using the contact form on my website: www.heritageflowersaz.com I always offer free 30 minute consultations to any interested bride, and from there I craft a custom proposal, tailored to their needs.
Lauren is a true professional and does exceptional work! If you are still searching for the right florist for your wedding, I would seriously consider Lauren to be your floral designer.
